In the quiet corridors of time, there emerged an institution in 1963 which is a living testament to the whispers of hope and the expectations to provide holistic education to the curious young minds. To unravel the mystery of its genesis, one needs to embark on a journey back, a retrospective gaze spanning six decades of the KVS odyssey in the picturesque tapestry woven by devoted educators and supported by resolute leaders.
It was a response to the needs of young minds, especially those of government employees’ children, who had to change schools – curriculum, textbooks and examination boards – with the change of their parent’s transfer. It was this necessity from which the Central Schools germinated, took root, started growing in size and has been flourishing to give continuous riches.
For this to happen, the vision was simple and clear: a phased opening of schools. Guided by the recommendations of the second pay commission, Government of India decided to take over 20 schools functioning in various defense establishments and named them Central Schools. Subsequently many civilian enclaves, townships of public sector undertakings, institutions of higher learning and in other defense / police establishments, partnerships were forged and the number of schools in its fold started growing gradually with the new name ‘Kendriya Vidyalayas.’
And so, the story unfolded — a tale of roots seeking sustenance, branches reaching for the sky, and fruits from the tree that stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of education, innovation, and immense contribution to nation building.
These schools sprouted with a common vision and fundamental features which were envisioned then and still staying very relevant, became the heart around which the entire school community revolves. The cornerstones included prioritized admissions for government employees, a steadfast commitment to high educational standards through the provision and development of skilled teachers, bilingual medium of instruction and a uniform curricular transaction and textbooks.
Since its inception, KVS had embraced an indic value system imbued in its myriad set of activities. Starting with the daily prayers and the enchanting mantras of Brihadaaranyaka Upanishad, such as ‘Asato ma sadgamay’ and ‘daya kar daan vidya ka’, the resonant echoes of the glorious anthem of KVS “Bhaarat ka Swarnim Gaurav Kendriya Vidyalaya Laayega” still traverse the length and breadth of the nation. In addition to that, the introduction of the unique ‘House System’ of KVS, to foster co-curricular activities and community participation to create a sense of belongingness, remain as distinctive features.
With the collaboration and support of revered institutions like IITs, BHU, IIMs, and NCERT to KVS, it embarked on a trajectory to etch its own distinctive narrative in the realm of school education. Sixty years hence, a striking comparison unfolds between the initially set standards and the current composite and inclusive environment. The roots of common NCERT textbooks, a meticulous staffing process to uphold standards, and an unwavering commitment to continuous capacity building of the personnel have formed the bedrock of its journey towards academic excellence and bilingual proficiency.
The seed, initially sown in the 20 regimental schools in the Defense sector, continues to experience the ebb and flow of the nation’s changing educational landscape. From 20 Central Schools in 1963 to 687 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 4.77 lakh students and staff of nearly 32 thousand in 1988 (Silver Jubilee Year) to 1092 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 11.2 lakh students and staff of about 58 thousand in 2013 (Golden Jubilee Year) to 1255 Kendriya Vidyalayas, 14 lakh students and staff of nearly 57 thousand in 2023 (Diamond Jubilee Year).
Today, this once modest tree has transformed into the guardian of the country’s premier educational avenue, boasting a network of 1,255 schools, including three abroad (Moscow, Tehran, and Kathmandu). Over 14 lakh children receive their tutelage under its branches, guided by the staff of over 55 thousand. The enchantment of those 20 schools growing in multiples 2 KVS@60 was nothing short of a magical ‘Ganitmala’, weaving a tale of educational evolution and unparalleled growth.
